    Software systems engineering: a journey to contemporary agile and beyond, do people matter?

    It is fascinating to view the evolution of software systems engineering over the decades. At the first glance, it could be perceived that the various approaches and processes are different. Are they indeed different? This paper will briefly discuss such a journey relating to findings from an empirical study in some organisations in the UK. Some of the issues described in the literature and by practitioners are common across different software system engineering approaches over the time. It can be argued that human-element of software development plays an integral part in the success of software systems development endeavour. After all, software engineering is a human-centric craft. In order to understand such issues, we crossed the discipline to other disciplines in order to adapt theories and principles that will help to better understand and tackle such matter. Other disciplines have well established human related theories and principles that can be useful. From Japanese management philosophies, we have adapted Lean and knowledge management theories. From psychology, we have adapted Emotional Intelligence (EI). With such an interdisciplinary view, some of the issues can be addressed adequately. Which bring the question: is it really the process or the people? The second author will reflect on his experience attending the first SQM conference 25 years ago. The reflection will discuss the evolution of software systems engineering, and what was changed since then, if at all changed

    Objects, actions, and images: a perspective on early number development

    It is the purpose of this article to present a review of research evidence that indicates the existence of qualitatively different thinking in elementary number development. In doing so, the article summarizes empirical evidence obtained over a period of 10 years. This evidence first signaled qualitative differences in numerical processing, and was seminal in the development of the notion of procept. More recently, it examines the role of imagery in elementary number processing. Its conclusions indicate that in the abstraction of numerical concepts from numerical processes qualitatively different outcomes may arise because children concentrate on different objects or different aspects of the objects, which are components of numerical processing

    Demonstrating impact: Lessons learned from the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council's AOD-Our-Way program

    In this paper, we describe the innovative way in which the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council uses ñ€Ɠclicker technologyñ€? to gather data to report on the key performance indicators of its ñ€ƓAOD-our-wayñ€? program, and how, with the subsequent combination of those data with other performance measures, it was possible to go beyond the initial evaluation. The paper also illustrates how the application of survey research methods could further enable enhanced reporting of program outcomes and impacts in an Indigenous context where Indigenous community controlled organisations want to build the evidence base for the issues they care about and ultimately drive their own research agendas

    The Bellagio II Summit sought to correlate current ISS (International Space Station) Space Medicine practice in the screening/assessment and management of CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) and to identify terrestrial applications for the general population pertaining to primary, secondary and tertiary diagnoses and treatments. We identified current Space Medicine practice for screening and monitoring cosmonaut and astronaut in the pre-, in-, and post-flight mission phases. We will discuss current Space Medicine standards and guidelines in the recognition and monitoring of CAD development, stabilization, and regression
